Social anxiety disorder and its symptoms

The concept of Social Anxiety Disorder may be fairly new category of anxiety disorders to many of you because it has not been the highlights of research by the league of medical professionals until recent times. In fact, social anxiety or phobia is common and affects at least one out of eight people at some stages in their lives and represents the third largest mental health problem in the world. Medications that are specific for treating social anxiety are accessible in over-the-counter pharmacies, hospitals and medical institutions in light of the development and improvements in clinical and medical research. Other general anti-anxiety drugs have also proven to work well for social anxiety as these drugs generally serve to relieve different kinds of anxiety disorders.

Social Anxiety Disorder or in other word, social phobia can be described as a marked and persistent fear that arises due to triggering embarrassment or anxiety that a social event or situation ensues. An individual with social anxiety disorder typically anticipate poor performance or judgment by people that would result in his or her feeling of embarrassment or anxiety. In public places regardless of interviews, meetings, speech, work or just any other social activities, the person will inevitably suspect or feel himself or herself being watched or evaluated by other people in one way or another. When these anticipatory actions and its consequent symptoms become so severe that they interferes with the persons day-to-day ordinary routines and social activities, he or she would simply avoid all kinds of social gatherings to prevent himself or herself in a humiliating position.

Unlike some other kinds of psychological problems, people with social anxiety are often misdiagnosed almost 80% of the time because it is not well understood both by general public as well as the medical professionals. Nevertheless, I cannot stress enough that you must determine that your complaints reflect the symptoms of a social anxiety disorder or otherwise. Treatment alternatives and medications for social anxiety disorder are well within your range; therefore, do not presume that your problem is an anxiety disorder before you have carefully analyse your conditions against the symptoms of social anxiety disorder.

The physical symptoms of social anxiety disorder are associated with two or more of the signs that are caused by persistent fear of worry, negative feeling of embarrassment and humiliation such as restlessness, feeling of fatigue, trembling and sweaty palms, lack of focus, muscle tension or sleep disturbance. There is a high possibility when you experience irritability, shortness of breath and intense anxiety and worry that suggest that you are suffering from a social anxiety disorder. The social anxiety symptoms closely resemble the ordinary shyness but they can be differentiated in terms of the intensity and extreme experience of anxiety and tension.

Since there are a great variety of different treatments, either drug-based or non-medication, for dealing with social anxiety, experimentation accords you with an opportunity to determine which treatment alternatives work best for your condition. Medication treatment has shown significant improvement for effectively treating social anxiety in the earlier stage of the disorder while other treatments such as psychotherapy are also useful for addressing more moderate and severe cases, probably where psychological issues are more pervasive.
